Chinese herbal medicine is a major component of Chinese medicine.  Herbal formulas have been around for hundreds of years with pharmacopeias going back to 1000 years B.C.  Classical formulas are modified to tailor suit the individual person and their condition.  Herbal formulas follow the same theories and strategies as Traditional Chines Medicine and are very effective alone and especially in combination with acupuncture.
